Keeping Quiet…

Warning : I intended this as a breezy romance and it has ended up like a sermon. I wanted to share some ideas and I’ve tried to do so with the story of an unconventional couple.

She was born mute… he was never one to speak much. They were comfortable with that. Words spoken are mostly shallow… meaningless banter. Silence is profound. Still people need conversations to distract them from the imperfections they see in themselves during the short-lived moments of calm they rarely chance upon. They were different. They never felt the need to talk to enrich their relationship. Words can be unreliable at times you want to convey delicate emotions. They had found other means to express.

She woke up before him every day. She would then gently run her fingertips on his forehead until a smile appeared on his sleeping face. Some days she would wet her fingers before doing this. She did this on busy days when she had to hurry. He knew it meant she wanted him to get up fast. On slower days her fingers would be warm. It meant he could take his time. This was her idea of a good start to the day. For people around them, the sense of touch had diminished. Touching your loved ones doesn’t seem as important as it used to in the beginning. They were rare that way. They reveled  in each other’s touch.

Once he was up she would get out of bed and go to the kitchen. It was the only part of her life that he was not allowed into. There are boundaries within every relationship…. this was theirs. Incidentally these boundaries most of the times are the reasons why relationships wilt. He didn’t understand why she insisted on him staying out of the kitchen. He didn’t like secrets. He never had one that he wanted kept and he didn’t appreciate others wanting him to keep theirs. It bothered him that she might have one…. because when she came out of the kitchen with coffee, each day it would taste different. It tasted good but not the same as the day before. He knew it wasn’t accidental. After giving him the coffee she would take a seat opposite him on the dining table and look at him. She wouldn’t take her eyes off until seeing his face when he took the first sip. He felt she was trying to tell him something…. like a puzzle that he had been challenged to solve.

When you decide to spend the rest of your life with someone, you need to make sure that the person can challenge you on some level... intellectual, emotional or even the most primeval of all… on the bed. If you don’t, you risk falling into a rut of premature contentment. In that state, there’s no room for improvement. It’s like you ‘fell’ in love and just don’t care about ‘rising’ anymore.

P.S
Sorry if you are disappointed. I had absolutely no idea as to how else I could’ve ended this.

Hit me with your best shot…

I’ve never got into a fight with anybody before. Verbal duels, plenty of times but never a fight as in a brawl. Weird thing is….. I want to, at least once. Now, before putting me on the list of psychopaths you never want to talk to again… hear me out.

Volumes have been written and said about the virtues of non-violence…. on how it won us our freedom, on how offering your right cheek to someone who has slapped you on the left one is such an awesome idea, on how one particular half-naked bald man went on a fast unto death every time he wanted someone else to do something that they didn’t wanna do, and the past couple of years have been about a contemporary incarnation of the former old man; a copycat who until very recently used to wake up every morning and think…….
‘hmmmm… I’m not feeling very hungry today…….. Ok then… I’m gonna go to Jantar Mantar and fast until someone at the Parliament feels enough pain in the ass to pass that damn bill’.
I don’t really like Anna Hazare. Just imagine… if all our mothers started wearing ‘I’m Anna’ caps and treating us with fast-unto-death-threats until we cleaned our rooms or helped her wash the dishes.

No matter how many arguments you stack up in favour of non-violence, truth remains that every warm-blooded man out there has a list of people they’d like to beat to pulp. I’ve known people who’ve got into bar-fights and came back with black eyes and palm impressions on their cheeks, yet gleaming with something very similar to pride. I don’t know why but looking at them I’ve had feelings closely resembling envy. I reckon it must be a masculine thing we retained from the medieval times…. battle scars on a warrior’s body have always been a source of envy for their less skilled colleagues.

On deeper introspection… maybe I don’t want to get into a fight, maybe what I want is just a battle scar. Something to proclaim that I am a badass… you know, something with a ‘Wolverine effect’.

Jean once said to Logan, ‘Girls like to flirt with bad boys… but they always go home with the good ones.’
At the core of my personality, I believe I belong to the latter category….. but I’d like a bit of both.

Lost…

It’s not very often that I’ve found myself lump-in-the-throat sad(previous occasions being Shahrukh in Kal Ho Na Ho, Shahrukh in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Shahrukh in Chak De,etc), but when I do feel sad it leaves a sort of scar inside me. It stirs up emotions every time I think about it. January 2nd 2014 was one such day. Three fun-packed days and four sleepless nights with 43 people who’ve been a large part of my small world for the last 3 years…. when it all came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel lost.

The thoughts gnawing away at the back of my mind are about the things that I’ll probably never be able to do again in my life. Never again will I be able to dance without any concern inside a moving bus and still not feel like an idiot. Never again will I be able to witness people I’ve known to be uptight dancing like madmen around a campfire. Never again will I be persistent enough to keep striking poses for photographs from morning till night until I have the perfect profile picture and cover photo. Never again will I be determined enough to vie with guys more handsome than me to get the attention of the cute girl that I’ve been dying to talk to for the past couple of years. Never again will I be shameless enough to offer my face to a girl who’s been smearing the New Year cake on some other dude’s face. Never again will I be able to fool a girl into thinking that I’m an expert swimmer and pretend to give her swimming lessons.

I know that we have one more semester together but I already miss you guys. I pray to God that when that last semester too is over, every one of you gets everything you hoped for from 4 years of college life and when the time for farewell comes, let’s make ourselves a promise that we’ll keep in touch no matter what…. no matter how lost we are in the ways of the world.

Bitch Please..

I recently attended an interview and it went quite well, that is until the woman started asking me questions from my own chosen branch of engineering.

After the customary ‘tell-me-about-yourself’ for which I had a well rehearsed custom-built answer, I was starting to feel very much at ease with the interviewer. But then she stumped me with a question about DC motors. After almost four years of slugging it at the Electrical and Electronics Department, I should’ve known the answer. I’ve never been ashamed of saying ‘I don’t know’ and so I went ahead and said it.

She was not one to give up. She started helping me find the answer giving me clues and all. I should’ve been relieved, even thankful that she had chose not to lecture me or aggravate my deep-seated sense of inadequacy regarding my own branch of study. Surprisingly, I felt offended that she would try to help me find the answer… as if she was helping a blind man cross the road.

‘Ma’am…’, I bit back condescension and cut her short, ‘I honestly don’t know the answer to that question.’
‘Okaaay’, she said.
‘Infact… If you are planning to go down the road of DC or AC machines, I’m pretty sure that I won’t be able to give a proper answer to any further questions.’

‘That’s too honest an answer for a job interview.’, she was smiling ear to ear clearly amused at the specimen sitting before her.

‘I am a strong proponent of radical honesty.’, I countered with a grin to match her smile.

‘But, isn’t it a failure on your part that you don’t even know the basics of what you’ve been studying four years..?’, now she was going below the belt.

From there on it became like a therapy session and she had trapped me with that question.
‘Totally…. It’s my fault……. But um….. in my defence, we don’t have the best of teachers.’, I managed a pathetic explanation. Then I started bitching about MGU, MACE and Engineering in general and she was prompting me with ‘hmmm’ and ‘how do you feel about that…?’
‘Where does that leave you with regard to B.tech…?’, she asked me after sometime.

I thought for a while and said, ‘I am fed up of what I thought I was supposed to be doing… I am not very good at what I enjoy doing... And I hate people telling me what I should be doing...’

She flashed a sympathetic smile, extended her hand for a shake and said, ‘Well…. this was fun.’. I shook her hand(so soft…) with a perplexed expression as if trying to say, ‘ Over already…?, I was just getting started’.

The list of selected candidates came and sure enough I was not there on it. Bitch please…. As if I needed your validation…(Read ‘Why didn’t you take me..? you were so pretty and I liked you very much’)

Masks, capes and bodysuits

Lately, filmmakers have been gripped by a sort of superhero frenzy. Men with colourful long flowing capes are being seen much too frequently on TV screens. Add an adjective before ‘man’ and you have a brand new superhero, whoever came up with this idea must have been a really lazy man. I mean if he could take time to draw up a ‘Super’hero with such awesome ‘Super’powers he could’ve taken some more time to create a name which was more creative and less obvious than ‘Super’man. And what was the purpose of the cape…?, if anything it creates more air resistance and makes it more difficult to fly. Thank God the creators of Flash had the common sense to get rid of it. Lastly, how can one forget the Red- underwear-on-top-of-a-bodysuit design. It couldn’t have been more tacky.

Indians have always been interested in astrology and rotation and revolution of planets. But “Shaktiman’…?, point towards heaven and turn yourself around like a top…?

Come on guys…, we are credited with the creation of ‘zero’. A little more originality and something less embarrassing would’ve been better.

Leave it to Rakesh Roshan to carry on the legacy of Shaktiman and what does he do..?

He adds a dollop of extra power to a normal guy, gives him the ability to run real fast and climb mountains and jump off tall trees. Commendable effort right..? People approve of it and he thinks about a sequel. You give him the benefit of the doubt and what does he do..?, gives the same normal guy super-fucking-human abilities. He can now fly like superman, run like flash, catch falling multi-storeyed buildings and come back from the dead. Frankly Mr Rakesh and Hrithik Roshan…… HOW DUMB DO YOU THINK WE ARE…?
